Bici Libre
We are an organization working on xʷməθkʷəy̓əm territory, out of the Bike Kitchen at the University of British Columbia (UBC). We use bikes as a tool to advance migrant farmworker justice in what is colonially known as the province of British Columbia, in the context of broader struggles for migrant and social justice in so-called Canada and beyond.
As an organization working out of the Bike Kitchen, we see bikes as tools for creating community and enacting autonomy. We refurbish donated bicycles and redistribute them to migrant farmworkers in pursuit of these objectives. The role of bikes in our organizing reflects their centrality in questions of mobility, affordability, sustainability, and community.
Our efforts centre the realities, hopes, needs, and desires of migrant farmworkers. We continuously strive to follow their leadership and build meaningful relationships to practise intentional and informed solidarity.
We connect the communities we are a part of with migrant justice, aiming to spread awareness and encourage meaningful activism and solidarity. As an organization currently working from the UBC campus, a significant portion of our outreach efforts are directed towards UBC students, faculty, and staff. Nonetheless, we are continuously working to expand our reach beyond UBC.
